Because every product is different and its impact on the environment needs to be measured differently, we have developed sustainability critieria for more than 3,200 product groups and have clustered them into 5 different categories that form the basis of our assessment of a product's eco friendlyness.

Products made from Sustainable Materials
Products receive the ECOCHECK sustainability badge when brands or their manufacturers can demonstrate that they are made from materials that meet our criteria for minimal environmental impact in the following three different categories:
- Ecological Materials
- Recycled Materials
- Innovative Materials
Ecological Materials
Description
Requirement
The product consists to a large extent of ecological materials that have been cultivated and/or manufactured in an environmentally friendly manner.
Verification
Brands or their manufacturers must be certified by one or more of our approved sustainability certifiers.
Impact
The use of ecological materials supports environmentally friendly cultivation and production processes that contribute to the protection of ecosystems and promote biodiversity.
Approved Certifiers
Recycled and/or Recyclable Materials
Description
Requirement
The product consists of a high proportion of recycled or recyclable materials.
Verification
Brands or their manufacturers must be certified by one or more of our approved sustainability certifiers or meet one or more of our sustainability criteria.
Impact
The use of recycled and/or recyclable materials reduces the need for raw materials and leads to the conservation of natural resources.

Brands or their manufacturers must meet one or more of our sustainability criteria.
Impact
The use of innovative materials are reducing the demand for animal or synthetic materials by providing renewable, plant-based alternatives with a better ecological footprint.

Brands or their manufacturers must be certified by one or more of our approved sustainability certifiers or meet one or more of our sustainability criteria.
Impact
The use of reusable, refillable or smart packaging reduces waste, resources and energy and increases the efficiency of transport and storage.

Electronical products receive the ECOCHECK sustainability label when brands, their manufacturers or suppliers can demonstrate that their energy efficiency meets our criteria for minimal environmental impact.

The product functionality corresponds to the latest state of the art and is designed for energy efficiency.
Verification
Brands or their manufacturers must be certified by one or more of our approved sustainability certifiers.

Description
Requirement
The brands or manufacturer is paying attention to continuous improvement with regard to resources and the environment. This ranges from the safe use of chemicals, waste management and traceability.
Verification
Brands or their manufacturers must be certified by one or more of our approved sustainability certifiers.
Impact
Sustainable production disproportionately reduces waste, resources and energy consumption.

CO2 Neutrality
Products or Packaging with CO2 neutrality
Products receive the ECOCHECK sustainability label if brands, their manufacturers or suppliers can prove that they have offset the CO2 emissions caused by the product according to our criteria.
CO2 Neutrality
Description
Requirement
The brand or manufacturer has offset the CO2 emissions caused by the product by e.g. purchasing CO2 certificates.
Verification
Brands or their manufacturers must be certified by one or more of our approved sustainability certifiers.
Impact
The compensation of CO2 emissions caused by the product leads to a reduction of greenhouse gases in order to limit global warming.
